I actually found a hotel in Japan that gives you your own, tiny single-futon room, for about 3000 yen per night, which sounds too good to be true, even if there's one bathroom per floor of 16 rooms, and two showers in the whole building. On the one hand, staying in cheap, no-frills places like that gives me that backpacker's pride, like I'm a swashbuckling vagabond who's just one unit less adventurous than the people who just pitch tents at campgrounds. (I have to remember to check whether they have a laundry.)

If you remember to wear a longish shirt that hangs past the crotch you won't have to worry about your adventurous unit pitching a tent. Much less noticeable, unless of course that's what you're going for.
